Join our Solar Energy International Training and NABCEP Certification Program today!

We provide Indigenous people with opportunities to be on the frontlines of the emerging Clean Energy Economy.
In 2022, the EPA seeded Purpose Focused Alternative Learning's Solar Training & Certification Program to instruct and support students in designing, assembling, and deploying Solar Technology applications across Indian Country.
At Sunburst Solar Academy, we offer theoretical and hands-on Solar training classes to solar technician candidates of all backgrounds who are serious about attaining a well-paying, in-demand Solar technology job on and off the reservation.

Students must successfully complete two theoretical courses: PV101: Solar Electric Design and Installation (Grid-Direct), and PV203: Photovoltaic System Fundamentals (Battery-Based). Upon completion, students will take the NABCEP exam, proctored by Purpose Focused.

Upon passing the NABCEP exam, students are eligible to participate in an intensive workshop onsite at Sunburst Solar Academy. Students will learn to survey and prep a worksite, as well as assemble PV Systems.

For their final phase of training, students who have completed the course will work together to install PV systems to families living without electricity in their communities. Students who fully complete this course will be ready for the Solar Workforce.

SEI has licensed Purpose Focused to teach the two prerequisite courses required to take the NABCEP exam.

A NABCEP certification demonstrates to solar industry partners nationwide that technicians have the capacity and skills required for the solar workforce.
"My biggest takeaway from this was the classroom camaraderie. Everybody was eager to learn. And the way we were taught was really good, because it taught a lot about the theory side of everything.
I've been doing electrical for a long time, but I wasn't too familiar with the DC side of electrical and the solar, but I left with a better understanding of how solar works, how we get our energy from the sun, how it's beneficial to to me as the installer, and also beneficial for the end user.
I want to provide Solar for families that don't have access to that electrical power, and provide them with the basic needs of lights and the refrigerator to keep their their food and their medication cold. If there's anything I took away from this class and this experience, it's that it was really worth it."
"I'm originally a satellite dish installer doing internet and television, and I travel all over the reservation. I had been interested [in solar tech] for a long time. When I heard about this program, I came in and got trained professionally. I learned a lot.
The program encourages you, so I started my own company, and now I have an idea of what I want to do- making modules. The plus is that I'm helping to promote more solar and helping people either get off the grid, or at least get some electricity to their homes.
In some areas, they kept their food inside of coolers. There was no fresh milk, no fresh meat. But enough solar to get a little refrigerator would be great. They would be able to bring home a full grocery list of whatever they needed. So I see that there's a lot of parts to help a lot of people in a lot of ways."
